Locksmithing Course Overview

Locksmithing Course description

Watch this locksmithing course and be able to pick ANY lock!

GET CERTIFIED AS A LOCKSMITH!

In our continuing effort to pre-serve the industrial arts we have created the Professional Locksmithing Course. AGI enables you to clearly see and understand all the details un-like ever before.  This complete locksmithing course consists of 16 hours of detailed, easy-to-follow instruction. We cover all types of lock mechanisms, showing you how to make keys and how to pick locks.

Keys:

We start with  the history of locks, show-ing locks as much as 400 years old, and then move into the different types of keys.  Learn everything you need to know about keys, from key blanks and catalogs, to how to make keys.  We teach you how to hand-file and machine-cut: flat keys, bit keys and cylinder keys.  We demonstrate three different methods of code cutting cylinder keys for padlocks, door locks and automotive applications.   We use detailed close-ups to teach how to prop-erly compare keys and find the correct blanks.

Locks.

We explain each lock mechanism in detail using diagrams, cut-aways and super close-ups to show even the smallest details. Here’s what you’ll learn about each type of lock:

Warded Locks:

We go over all the different types of warded locks including padlocks and old house locks. We not only teach how the mechanisms work, we show how to make a key from impressioning the lock AND we show you how to use the proper tools to "pick" open ANY warded lock!  FAST!

Lever Locks:

Everything from the simplest cabinet lock to sophisticated safe deposit locks is covered. Lever locks are much harder to im-pression and pick, but our in-structor gives you all the tips and tricks learned from over 40 years of locksmithing!

Wafer/Cam Locks. Exclusive cutaways!  We cover wafer style locks and cam locks in great detail, including automotive wafer locks. Extreme close-ups, diagrams and cutaway locks take all the mystery out of wafer lock mechanisms.

Pin Tumbler Locks:

Using a special cutaway lock mechanism, we show you the basic design and operation of pin tumbler locks, the main type of lock used in homes, commercial and automotive applications.

PLUS . . .

High security and electronic locks . . . every-thing from design and repair, to installing and picking.  Residential and commercial: key-in-knob, deadbolt and combination lock systems. We thoroughly cover design, assembly, disassembly, installation, re-keying, master keying, picking and impressioning.

When you complete this course, you will understand how to work on both residential AND commercial locking systems.

What Our Students Have To Say

Great program so far. Coursework is informative and in depth. You can tell Gene, Ken, and all the instructors are true gun guys and have a passion for the industry. Getting to learn from Bob is a great opportunity, as his knowledge was immense (big thanks to Gene for making this possible). The exams are NOT an easy “correspondence” and challenge you to know the course material. I feel confident having the ability to venture out into the business with the ability to apply what I’ve learned to provide a QUALITY and valuable service to customers. If you are hesitant of whether you’ll be getting great instruction, DON’T be. AGI is the real deal! One of the best things I’ve ever decided to do.

The advanced master class is just what I needed! I have always been a gun enthusiast and now to know the design, function and repair of all firearms systems is priceless. It goes beyond that! From making my own tools, parts and much more, I am well equipped to tackle anything firearm related with confidence. I would recommend anyone wanting to gunsmith for hobby or business to utilize this institute of knowledge if you want the best. Invest in yourself with AGI ~ MR GUN MASTER

As a recent retiree from the Marine Corps, I was on the lookout for a meaningful and practical career path. This gunsmithing course has truly exceeded my expectations. Not only does it provide a comprehensive curriculum, but it also offers a wealth of resources and tools that are essential for building a successful business. Despite dealing with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), I found the course incredibly accommodating and supportive. The instructors are knowledgeable and understanding, and the course structure is designed to ensure that anyone can thrive. Additionally, my experience working at a gun store beforehand really helped me grasp the practical aspects of the trade. I’m confident that this training will help me launch and sustain a successful gunsmithing business. For those who are living in 2A restrictive states this course will also apply to the guns that you do have available to you, so it wouldn’t be a situation where you take the course and then you’re out of luck.

After doing some research on schools I contacted AGI and enrolled. I have to say after six months, I am already living the dream. I haven’t finished school yet and already have a thriving business. I followed the advice on starting my business, getting an FFL and building the business. In more than one class segment they warn you about not getting so busy you don’t have time to get the education done. Well, I got my FFL and established my business in October 2025. It is now January 2026, and I am slammed with work. I recently semi retired as a first responder after 36 years and wanted to find something I could do at my own pace and on my own schedule. I love firearms and am now living my dream of becoming a gun smith. At AGI you will learn design, function and repair. Using this basic philosophy I have been able to fix guns I have never seem before. If you are passionate about firearms and want to make a living fixing them, I recommend AGI. The staff at AGI are amazing!

Your program is very good, thorough and informative. Instructors, especially Bob, really know the subject and explain it well. I am a contractor and was very busy but now things have slowed down a little for winter and I am back to studying the material. So a little behind but going at my own pace, seems to work well for me. Thank you.

I’m enrolled in and well on the way to becoming an AGI Master Gunsmith. I’ve constructed a new shop. It’s a 30 x 36 Real Steel building. I’ve got a lathe, an air compressor, a welder and a small mill. I’ve learned so much it is hard to believe. Added about $30,000 in tools. Not really required but its important to me to be able to perform the various types of repairs and processes that todays customers expect. AGI has exceeded all my expectations. The instructors are Master Gunsmiths with years of experience. I’m still in training but many customers have already came by and have trusted me with their firearms. I can’t say enough about the training and support that the AGI staff provide. AGI is worthwhile. They are pure professionals. It is my opinion that it is the right choice for me to go with AGI to become a certified gunsmith. I highly recommend them. If you are interested in becoming a Gunsmith you won’t regret going with AGI!

On October 27th I signed up for the pro level 1 course on your advice (best advice I ever took) to go with the monthly plan to get things going , once I  received the FFL package from you guys, I filed for my LLC (Cowboy Action Customs LLC), got approval 11/19/25  and state approval for d/b/a (Cowboy Action Customs), mailed my FFL application Wed before Thanksgiving,  FFL licensing center started my application 12/3/25, had my in person interview and inspection today,  everything went through great and I’ll get my license in the mail soon she says.  The company I work for is shutting down and will be paying for my additional training. So I will be able to bump up to level 2 Gunsmithing Course soon. Shutdown for the company is still scheduled for April 10, so glad I did this! You guys are awesome thanks so much for your help,  time,  and ,advice,  Unbelievably I have somehow managed to open a retail gun shop and gunsmithing services seemingly overnight,  I feel like I am literally in an AGI promotional video,  excuse the language but this is F@#*king crazy,  you can forward this to whoever you want,  Gary thanks so much. Talk to you soon! If I hadn’t taken your advice to get this going I would be months behind of where I am ! Thanks! John Clement

Love the self paced program. It allows me to work around my work schedule and home life, which has been extremely beneficial.

I would highly recommend anyone interested in becoming a professional gunsmith or starting a home based business or just a hobbyist to enroll in one of these AGI programs. You will learn so much on design, function, repair, and customization from many of the best master gunsmiths in the business. Importantly, you will be able to do it all at your own pace. Now, because of AGI, I was able to start my own shop with the knowledge, confidence, and resources to be a successful master gunsmith. It can change your life. Thanks, AGI!
